<snip>
As for readable code = CL does have its *LT and *AND and *BCAT = I find
the latter much more readable than |< and it will have no problem with
variant characters. Is the "hook-over" character an invariant one in EBCDIC?

</snip>

I have always used the *xxx variants for comparisons and concatenation. Maybe a mental block (or lack thereof) but I could never keep the "short cuts" straight. When I see CL code with things like |<, I invariably have to pull up the CL manual to figure out what's going on.

I realize that for someone that uses them all of the time (or is multi-lingual, like James), this failing is laughable/sad.
