As someone whose first exposure to "standard" programming languages was with
BASIC (although I really began with HP programmable calculators), I find <>
quite natural.

I don't know how much time you have working with RPG, but it seems you were
(fortunately) spared the COMP and IFxx (eg IFNE) keywords.

I prefer the C style of != personally. Since almost every other language
I've code in it was !=. RPG is the first one I've seen that is <> which
feels very strange when first starting out coming from C/C++ background.
It makes the code less readable for someone not versed in the language,
maybe some people don't care in that case, but I think its nice to play
well with others :)

As far as assignment...I won't go there. They aren't really needed in RPG
since we don't have objects, unless you wanted to get rid of EVAL-Corr
maybe.

It is a gem, isn't it? :)

And I've always preferred GEM to WinDoze. :p

Just be thankful that in RPG, you don't have to deal with the whole C
business of "!=" for not equal, "==" for equal, and "=" for assignment,
or the whole Pascal/ALGOL business of "=" for equal and ":=" for
assignment.
