That really depends on the report, but for me, yes. My code template
(courtesy of another list member at one time).

if (OpenCursor() = SQL_SUCCESS);
dow (FetchNext() = SQL_SUCCESS);

// *** INSERT CODE HERE ***

enddo;
endif;

CloseCursor();

I then have subprocedures that process the above logic. Initially that was
to eliminate the fixed format SQL from the free-format code, now I do it
for readability.

P OpenCursor B
D OpenCursor PI 5A

/free
exec sql
close c1;
exec sql
declare c1 cursor for ....;
exec sql
open c1;

return sqlStt;

/end-free
P OpenCursor E

P FetchNext B
D FetchNext PI 5A
/free
exec sql
fetch c1 into :gresultds;
return sqlstt;
/end-free
P FetchNext E

P CloseCursor B
D CloseCursor PI 5A
/free
exec sql
close c1;
return sqlstt;
/end-free
P CloseCursor E

All of you using RPG+SQL for reports instead of OPNQRYF, I assume you're
using a cursor in RPG?

I prefer to use SQL today, but you obviously never used the BLDQRYSLT TAA
Tool.
It made OPNQRYF a breeze to use...

Robert:
In my 23 years, I have never found OPNQRYF to be easy. Once I learned
SQL
and then embedded SQL, I never even considered using OPNQRYF again. To
me,
a SQL cursor and SELECT statement is much easier, especially when using
dynamic selection and/or sort criteria, than an OPNQRYF.
