The problem with just replacing all <'s is that the method
inserts not only CRLF between nodes but also IN textnodes
so you will have altered node content and not all parsers
likes that
CRLF<name>abcdefgCRLF</name>
Actually, the big problem with this carte blanch replacement is that it
doesn't recognize \<. Such as in
<formula>A \< B</forumula>
I was certain someone would call me out on that, but it didn't happen.
Good, I say. :) But just for the sake of completion, one way to solve that
is:
sed 's%\([^\]\)[<]%\1\r\n<%g'
Yeah, I know.
s Substitute
% Delimiter
\(THIS\) Save THIS as #1 (a second would save as #2...)
[^\] Any character other than \
[<] Our character
% Delimiter
\1 Our first saved value (#1)
\r\n< Our replacement value
% Delimiter
g Global
This will work as long as the < doesn't land at the beginning of a line. I
think that's acceptable in this case. It doesn't match on \< because \ is a
\. :)
