Too many years have passed for me to remember the exact details but
there was something about "OPM" being hard-coded in many documents
whereas "NPM" was a substitution tag. The difficulties/costs of
finding and changing every instance meant that finding a new meaning
for the letters was the most practical way to go. Have to assume that
the full text "Old Program Model" wasn't used very much and could be
replaced.
There were other things on the relative timing front - but I've slept
too many times since then.
