Procedure performance is off the scale compared to a program. I just did
some timing tests using V6R1 and the new program model.

Using the new program model (Main keyword) cut the call time about in half
but doing a procedure call to a service program was about 16 times faster.

Service programs are always the way to go. They offer functionality and
capabilities that you simply cannot get using a program. That people
continue to use the call model scares me.

Unless you mean when you leave *LR off - then the program startup is

There is still an extra cost, right? since program calls are always
dynamic?

I cannot discern which of your messages was sent first (I received them in
the order shown), so:

No, the first call is dynamic. After that, the pointers are established,
so
the dynamic piece goes away.

The program startup process can be avoided (after the first time) by
leaving
LR off, yes.

My point is that the performance will be extremely close if LR is left off
and one program makes the call many times.

More of a concern, then, is maintainability.
