You can use a named indicator.

d MyFlag s n inz(*off)
// Rule validation
if rules satisfied;
MyFlag = *on;
endif;

// Later...
if MyFlag; // Data type N is boolean, true *on, false *off
do something...
endif;

This is the same as "if MyFlag = *on;"

You still need to convert Y to *on and N to *off, but that would be in
the
validation routine.

Need to be very careful here. myFlag may have additional values not
represented. For example, if the field is initialized to spaces (as
defaulted or otherwise), it does not equal "Y" and does not equal "N". A
later test of "myFlag = 'Y'" won't have the expected result if not
initialized. So we would first need to ensure that it's already being
initialized within the program, or that we completely understand the
ramifications of our change. Come to think of it we need to be sure of the
initialization in any case.
