You can eliminate two Java strings by using RPG's %TRIM:

string1 = newString(%trim(RPGvar1));
string2 = newString(%trim(RPGvar2));
string3 = concat(string1:string2);

If the concatenated trimmed values of RPGvar1 and RPGvar2 is not greater than RPG's maximum for strings (65535 prior to V6R1, 16773104 in V6R1), then you only need one Java string:

string3 = newString(%trim(RPGvar1) + %trim(RPGvar2));
