I started my career with RPG II on a System/34, and when working on converting old programs I sometimes revert back to old techniques.

I'm just having a blast refereeing program-described-files-vs.-SQL. Thankfully we will be converting to externally-described files in the future.

OK - but why not code it in the more obvious RPG IV length based style? The use of the Overlay keyword makes it really obvious that they are two versions of the same thing.

From/To notation is so 1990s don't you think?

i.e.

D ds
D Num 7p 4
D CharF 4 Overlay(Num)

That was it! I finally got all the little ducks in a row, as in:

D ds
D Num 1 4p 4
D CharF 1 4

Then set Num = My7digitnum
