My apologies for not responding sooner, however I was called out of town
Thursday night and didn't return until this morning. (FYI, they still only
have rotary dialup in some of the cow-country of extreme SE Ohio.)
I read your response and did manage to insert some 'defensive coding'
before I left last week. I had a thought to test my code for data I did
not expect to receive and in that event send a message to inform me of
that occurring. Upon my return to work I had four messages telling me that
'unexpected data was received'.
My thought was that since this was occurring and I wasn't coding for it,
my program had no way to send an ack back to the client, and my thinking
was that may have been responsible for the 'hung' condition since the
client was always waiting for an ack (which was never going to arrive)
before proceeding. (I'm only sending an ack upon receipt of 'valid'
data...)
In light of the suggestions in your response, I'll review the rest of the
code to see what I can improve regarding it's immunity to these
'disturbances'.
Thanks again for your valued input!
Regards, Jerry
