We have started to use commands and command validation routines a lot
more
lately, and up to now we have been passing dates as an 8 char value and
then convert it in the rpg program.

I noticed that commands do have a date data type however it appears
that
it is passing that as a char value as well.

From RPG to RPG (or between RPG and COBOL, etc.) it makes sense to use a
date data type, which you would do by specifying a D data type in your
prototype.

From a Command (which mechanism I highly recommend) you can use a date
value... your program will receive a *CYMD date. Convert using something
like "Eval myDate = %Date(myparm: *CYMD0) ;"
