Passing a date value in a parm

We have started to use commands and command validation routines a lot more
lately, and up to now we have been passing dates as an 8 char value and
then convert it in the rpg program.

I noticed that commands do have a date data type however it appears that
it is passing that as a char value as well.

Has anyone found a mechanism to pass actual date data types through
commands? I know the a CL does not pass an actual date data type so that
is not an option.
