Yes, that's how you have to do it. I don't think rexec allows a return parm,
but standard io (stdio) is available, as well as stderr. I've done stuff
where I've essentially put output to stdio, and then read that after my
rexec call.

Look around..I believe there are some implementations of rexec type
solutions that allow you to send/receive parms. I think scotthasanappforit.
I just saw something (in a magazine? on midrange.com?) about that.

You can send an rexec command to a PC and have it call a procedure in a
dll.
The location of the dll doesn't matter...it's what's calling it that
matters. An iSeries program can't call a dll.
