I've had problems with sql rejecting complex data structure definitions, that may have changed in 6.1 but I haven't tried, the based stuff works every time.

There's no need for any of the based stuff. Just simply include a
group field in the DS so that the array can be defined against it.
I've made the required changes in the code snippet below.
