No - there is a new thing at v6r1 where you can skip the cycle completely, I think it is. The rules have not changed. Here's the documentation for what's new at v6r1 - straight off the internet

Using the MAIN keyword on the Control specification, a subprocedure can be identified as the program entry procedure. This allows an RPG application to be developed where none of the modules uses the RPG cycle.

So no need to worry. If you don't use the new keyword, nothing changes. IBM doesn't make things break when they add new things - hardly ever!!

Gotta look up what's new - always!!

I did a quick test on my 6.1 box. Variables in the "MAIN"
procedure are not global. Globals must be defined before the
first "p" spec.
