I have an externally defined file with the record consisting
of the following fields

Which in essence is 3 arrays of a 24 array
There is a way of reading this file into a 2 dimensional data set
(or am I getting COBOL flashbacks?)

Most of the suggestions I've seen here are more complicated than is needed. All you really need to do place the field names into DSs in the required order (no length - just the names). RPG will populate them for you automagically on each read. If it is essential for all the fields to be in a single DS then you can use group fields to achieve this. Doing it this was=y also soft-codes the whole thing so there's no problem if the field sizes change.
