Sources in the root or QOpenSys filesystem could be more easily accessed by third party software. It can be much more easily and platform independently packaged. Could be interesting for those people not using WDSc/RDi.
If you want to have it offline just make a tar or jar and there you go.
You could use a standard version control system like svn or cvs (don't know if there is a cvs client on the i) which is a real bonus to the development and you have it for free.
Problem is if you want to create a service program that the binder source has to be in a database physical source file member. No stream file option there (not even on 6.1).
My 2 cents.

This begs the question - why would you store your source on the IFS? I
know it can be done, but I'm curious as to why? What are the benefits?

Unfortunately it will probably be a long time before we get to v6.1.

Does anyone know? Is there a way to do this or am I out of luck?
CRTSQLRPGI supports IFS source files starting in 6.1.
(CRTBNDRPG/CRTRPGMOD added IFS support in v5r2.)
