Well, I won't pretend that I'm capable of retaining everything I read on this list, and I'll admit that I don't read every topic. I do try and make my own archives when I find something interesting.
I think you're missing a couple of points. I realise you have a far greater experience than I do and probably a greater capacity than I have. You don't seem to realise that what is obvious for you is not at all so for those without your capabilities, and a lot of things are never acquired until put into practice. They cannot be learned from reading alone.
More importantly, I think you underestimate the value of the list. Before discovering Midrange.com, I'd have passed hours reading IBM documents instead. I would much rather ask the question here for the simple reason that I get the chance to communicate with some great people who I have learned to have a lot of respect for. If the same questions didn't arise from time to time I don't think I'd learn as much. Also, whenever a question gets answered, it's not just the OP who benefits. A day does not go by without my learning something from the answers to other peoples' questions. Also, have you noticed how a few members reply more often than all the others? Good for them!
This is a community, not just a faq. I think it's a pity that you don't contribute more instead of being more concerned about how the list should be used. Winging. Leave that to us poms.

Not at all. If you looked at the responses to this question from two weeks ago you would see that at least two people provided good explanations of how Data Area Data Structures work and explained how to avoid the problem you are experiencing.
But then you couldn't be bothered to refer to an InfoCentre reference I provided in a previous response so I guess you're unlikely to search for the answer in previous responses either. The RPG Reference also supplies this information but that's obviously beyond the pale.

That wasn't a grumpy response--simply pointing out that if you paid attention to what occurs on the list you would have learned about UDS behaviour two weeks ago and would not have needed to ask. You would already have the answer to your question and YOU wouldn't be cluttering the list with questions that have ALREADY been dealt with.
And if you'd looked in the archives you would have found your answer.
Perhaps you are one of those list members who doesn't bother reading anything that:
a) isn't an answer to a question you asked or
b) isn't a subject that has immediate significance for you
or perhaps you have a memory like a sieve and forget things more than a few moments old in which case how will you ever learn anything if you only concern yourself with what's important right this instant?
