Thanks Scott, you're early today!

Sorry to persist, now my program looks like this :
My test program :
D AParms UDS DTAARA ( MyDtaAra )
D Parm1 LIKE ( REF_Parm )

C EVAL Parm1 = 'test'
C OUT AParms

C CALL 'Mypgm'

/FREE

DSPLY %SUBST ( GetMyPgmError ( ) : 1 : 52 );
RETURN;

/END-FREE

In mypgm:
D AParms DS DTAARA ( MyDtaAra )
D Parm1 LIKE ( REF_Parm )

C IN AParms
More code...
C RETURN // LR is off

P GetMyPgmError...
P B EXPORT
D PI LIKE ( REF_ERRMSG )

/FREE

RETURN globalErrorMessage;

/END-FREE

P GetMyPgmError...
P E

When MyPgm returns a value is in globalErrorMessage.
When my test program goes back to get the error message, with DSPLY %SUBST ( GetMyPgmError ( ) : 1 : 52 ), why is globalErrorMessage blank?

Also, I don't seem to master the use of WATCH in STRDBG. The program doesn't break at all.

Thanks

Not at all. If you looked at the responses to this question from two weeks ago you would see that at least two people provided good explanations of how Data Area Data Structures work and explained how to avoid the problem you are experiencing.

But then you couldn't be bothered to refer to an InfoCentre reference I provided in a previous response so I guess you're unlikely to search for the answer in previous responses either. The RPG Reference also supplies this information but that's obviously beyond the pale.

Thanks fur nuttin'. Your reply just clutters the list and adds useless
entries to the archives. Although I enjoy your contributions also.
Spices up things a bit. But are you really that grumpy?

That wasn't a grumpy response--simply pointing out that if you paid attention to what occurs on the list you would have learned about UDS behaviour two weeks ago and would not have needed to ask. You would already have the answer to your question and YOU wouldn't be cluttering the list with questions that have ALREADY been dealt with.
And if you'd looked in the archives you would have found your answer.

Perhaps you are one of those list members who doesn't bother reading anything that:
a) isn't an answer to a question you asked or
b) isn't a subject that has immediate significance for you

or perhaps you have a memory like a sieve and forget things more than a few moments old in which case how will you ever learn anything if you only concern yourself with what's important right this instant?

Regards,
Simon Coulter.
