That's a bit of an overstatement, isn't it? My grad school Computer Systems professor not only taught, but he also had his own business designing and developing banking software.

It's another take on the "Those who can do; those who can't teach." A friend of mine from high school, who was a Marine Major and used to train new USMC recruits, told me that the only people that could become DI's (teachers) were those that had proven that they were the best. Which invalidates the cliché.
