Didn't know you could do that, or C-style += and -= in RPG/free, but as to the above, it's perfectly straightforward, given that any expression that can be used in an IF statement will return a logical (Boolean, "indicator") value, and an assignment statement simply pours the value on the right side into the variable on the left, assuming they're either of the same type, or the value can be coerced to the same type as the variable.

That, incidentally, is why many languages use different operators for assignment and equality (e.g., Pascal and Modula-2 with := for assignment, Fortran with .EQ. for equality, and C and Java with == for equality).
