Another approach is not to use the indicators - instead use a different record format for each set of conditions.

It seems to me that perhaps a better (or at least different) way of
building the line might be preferable. Why not build it in (say) a DS
with overlapping fields where needed. Couldn't be any more confusing
than any print line that needs more than 100 indicators!
