You can already get out of the misery to some extent and have a simple READE loop with CHAIN as the priming read. Just use %STATUS instead of %FOUND and %EOF.

chain (keys) filename;
dow %status(filename) = 0;
do stuff
reade (keys) filename;
enddo;
