Use a datastructure with the numeric field overlayed on top of the character field.

Afternoon everyone
I have a program that uses the following code

MOVEL character-field numeric field

so that if character-field contains 00000000M the numeric field contains
000000004- (minus 4)

What is the freeform equivalent?
I have

numeric-field = %dec(character-field:9:0);

with numeric-field being defined as
D numeric-field s 9s 0
my program errors out with
Message ID . . . . . . : RNX0105
Message . . . . : A character representation of a numeric value is in
error.
Cause . . . . . : A conversion from character to numeric found data that
was
not valid.
Recovery . . . : Correct the numeric data.

If anyone can help, or point me in the correct direction, that would be
great
