Another, possibly better, idea is to use the spawn() api to create the async job and the waitpid() api
to wait for it to finish.

Biggest benefit IMHO to using spawn() and waitpid() is that the OS is responsible for notifying the
waiting job. So even if the spawned job ends abnormally, your waiting program will be able to tell.
