I'm in favor of the data queues, as well - because I never trust guessing how long something will take. And I tend not to like polling methods. Of course, waiting on a queue is like polling under the covers!!

Chris did not mention checking for the completion of the other job - witha timeout you'd want to check that, methinks.

confusion ... as someone else who's looking at the code might think the data
queue is supposed to actually supply data,

Calling sleep() or DLYJOB makes a lot more sense to me.
