Different problem - he wants to work with the field NAME, not the VALUE. Nothing in RPG that I know of lets you turn the name of a field into a value - it would be really nasty to do that, I think, using APIs or whatever.

legacy file that contains rates by month. For each month, there is a field, RATE01, RATE02, etc.

I would like to be able to check the name of tbe field and then know that I
