We have been having a discussion about the pros & cons of these two choices.
It would be interesting to read the thoughts of the stars and almost-stars on this topic?

Being neither, I'll just add my two cents. Anybody who has ever pontificated about "self-documenting" code should be 100% behind the %eof(file) syntax. Personally, I try to use it all the time because if I ever have to move the test away from the I/O operation, even slightly, I can do so.
