To get it INTO a numeric field, you need to add or remove leading zeros to make it the exact length of the target field, then stick it into a zoned field.

To simply remove leading zeros, on the other hand, try repeatedly substringing it to cut off the leftmost character until that leftmost character is a nonzero digit.
