Subject: Re: RPG, Java and Classpath practices
As best that I call recall, here are some of the issues that
cropped up for us:
1. We switched from invoking Java procedures to running "pure"
java programs with the RUNJVA command. We then found that the
JVM actually ran in its own job and that raised several issues
that affected our development - the Java code ran with a
different QTEMP, different library list, etc.
2. The JVM could only be started once from a native job. Trying
start it twice from the same job produced errors. So if a job
stream had already invoked a Java program with a particular
classpath and you required a different classpath - well, that was
just unfortunate.
My team came up with a lot of pretty good work-arounds (use a
temporary directory instead of QTEMP, pass in the library list as
a parameter, etc.), but eventually we decided that the returns
didn't justify the effort. We stood back, wiped the gooey stuff
off our hands, and decided stop trying to mix Java and native processes.
Our shop still uses Java and RPG, but not together.
Regards,
Blair Smith
