No, Rob, I'm talking about changing the physical layout and/or location of the data. For example, splitting a file into online and nearline storage, or splitting a table into volatile and non-volatile data. Combining data from multiple databases. Using failover machines, accessing data from services, any number of techniques that don't involve actually changing the characteristics of the fields themselves.

Yes, if you change a field from numeric to alpha, you're going to have issues. But if you move data that is five years old or older to a cheaper SAN, then you can save the company money. Do you see the difference?
