Yes... Unicode matches ASCII, and there's a gap between numbers and letters. But that's not quite as bad as the gaps in EBCDIC in the middle of the letters.

The reason I suggested Unicode instead of ASCII is because it's much easier to convert an EBCDIC string to Unicode in RPG than it is to convert it to ASCII. Unicode is a simple assignment in RPG... whereas ASCII would require calling an API.
