We've using a Forms Print package (not naming names here ;) ) for several years. Never looked back. We have a form defined for *STD (132 column), one for *STD198 (yes we have to change the overrides) and even one for QRY235. All these could very easily have a footer added of almost any length.

If your need is only for "standard" reports, some forms companies will even sell you one predefined form. But, I think you will quickly want the full package.

The way the forms packages work is to print to "virtual" queues. From there a program picks up the spool data and places it into a form (which is a PCL or PS "template"). You could probably write your own if you are intent on it. I've heard of people inserting their own PCL codes in the spool including the code to print a graphic (which was previously downloaded to the printer).

Subject: HUGE footer needed on pgm described rpts

My CEO want a 1400 character footer to be printed on EVERY PAGE of EVERY
REPORT we generate from the System i. All of our reports are programmed
described (no external descriptions; mostly S36 stuff !!). Using PRTTXT
on the *prtf only supports 30 chars, so that's out. All of my reports are
printed on a InfoPrint 70 laser printer. If I want to start using
different fonts and sizes in my output, do I need to externalize my
printer files or can I do this in the internal description? Can I do this
and still use the RPG-logic cycle? Will I need AFP? This is the first
time I have ever had to deal with this kind of issue. Any help is
appreciated. Thanks.
