The OP's question is really impossible to answer without knowing something about the context, (or "perspective" as I put it in my last message) of the program that's trying to get the name programmatically.

I was making the assumption (since we're talking about RPG) that the program was running on the "iSeries" the OP referred to. With that in mind, I was thinking that the program might be sending messages to other machines that needed to contain the hostname of the mail server. In other words, trying to find out "what is this machine called by other machines". Now that I've typed it out, that's an awful lot bigger assumption than it seemed at the time.
