I have a couple of templates that I use...
I am glad that you spoke up. When I started to read about this
interview testing by having to write something from scratch... I
figured ain't no use of me applying... I have not wrote new
since...(hmmmm... not sure when...) I have been called a logo
programer... Bits and pieces from templates... or an existing
similar programs.

I would most likely not do well.

I'm probably going to generate some bad vibes with this response,
but,
while I have done exactly what Shannon proposed, I couldn't write a
subfile program (with or without embedded SQL) from scratch to save
my
life. At least not one that worked.

I have a couple of templates that I use for the RPG IV code, and I
use
SDA to design the panels. Usually all I have to do is make a few
changes to the template, such as what fields to write to the subfile
record, and I'm done with it. Sometimes it might get more
complicated,
such as a second subfile panel. I really like the functionality of
subfiles (as do my users), but I hate coding the @#$% things.

Have the candidate write a short program that uses embedded SQL to
pull
some
records from a file of your choice and display them in a subfile of
your
own
design-specs.

That's a hands-on test that will demonstrate immediately if the
person
knows
what they are doing or not.

Subject: Need Some RPG Technical Questions

The manager on my new project has asked me to derive a list of RPG
technical
questions for a programmer interview she is conducting later today.
The
company is coming off of two old platforms (COBOL and Lansa) and
their
intent is to do all development in RPGIV, /Free and embedded SQL.
They
have
been burned previously by a programmer or two who represented mucho
experience only to find that they did not know sh** from Shinola.

If you have questions to submit which are thoughtful and moderately
involved, please send them to me offline at RWMunday@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Thanks,
