I assume you're referring to MarkMagic/400 from CYBRA Corporation. I'm pretty sure that it generates the labels in the printer's language. It uses *USERASCII because the output from MarkMagic is already in the printer's language, and it wouldn't make sense for the i5/OS spooler to try to do further transformation on it.

What you need is to get a module for MarkMagic that output's PDF instead of the printer's language. I know they have something like that, but I don't know anything more about it -- I personally use TL Ashford instead of MarkMagic, so my experience is very limited.

I suggest giving them a call.
