I was curious so I tested that hypothesis. Technology brings changes...
Using /free on V5R4M0, rolling through a million calculations:
divide 648000 ms
multiply 279000 ms
That is, a million divides takes about .369 seconds more to perform than
a million multiplies. I don't think I'm going to lose sleep over that
efficiency loss, but the compiler team might be interested to know that
OPTIMIZE(*FULL) looks pretty good in cases like this:
divide 114000 ms
multiply 118000 ms
