1 - It is not uncommon for something to be supported on a higher level
with a target release for a previous level that would not compile on a
machine actually at that target release. I think some of the CL
enhancements required a ptf, on the lower level box to be able to run. Ok,
maybe it is uncommon, but not unheard of. Therefore your program might
actually run on V5R2. Who knows how IBM handled it. They could have
modified the precompiler to handle it versus using CASTing. It was
discussed earlier how the precompiler puts stuff in qtemp, and generates a
bunch of RPG code and then compiles that. Loosely comparable to
autogenerating SQL-CLI.
2 - Have you checked all of the V5R2 ptf cover letters for 5722ST1 at

I found some hits for 5722ST1 for V5R2 that never made it to cume.
