Hi James
I can't see how you can say you are completely comfortable with the cycle if
you have never had any "luck" with total time or level break calculations.
They are an inherent part of it. If you understand the cycle you would not
need any "luck".

Subject: Re: RPG Cycle (was Multi-Occurring DS)
In general, my impression (no scientific data to support
it) was that RPG II programmers picked up on RPG III pretty fast (this
was some time ago, no IV). The RPG III programmers, though, that had
never done II, seemed to have a heck of a time grasping the concept of
the cycle, program-described files, etc.
Funny: I taught myself OPM RPG/400 over a decade ago, having never used
any other version of RPG. I'm completely comfortable with The Cycle, but
I've never had any luck with any of my attempts to use level breaks (and
I think I've only once used "total time"), and never bothered to use
secondary files.
As to program-described files, I've had to use them a lot for programs
that need to be able to access files they weren't specifically compiled
for, and the only time I've ever had trouble with them is on the rare
occasions when I had to use I-specs and/or O-specs, rather than reading
to/writing from a DS.
