Actually, you need to be careful with that as well. If variable STRING is not varying length, then you would wind up with blanks padded to the right. SQL would interpret this as "Varying number of characters, followed by the string "ABCABC", followed by varying number of characters, followed by some number of blank characters".....

As I recall, IBM recommends that STRING should look something like this (assume STIRING is 15A): '%ABCABC%%%%%%%%'.

I think varying length fields are handled correctly, and STRING could simply be expressed as '%ABCABC%'.

If STRING does not look like '%ABCABC%' then you probably will get the count
= 0.
For LIKE operations do fill in the variable the % as needed.
