Elvis posted the link that helped me earlier. I looked at it many times before but missed it. Footnote 53 says that a derived table is the other name for a nested table expression.

You can read about them in the SQL Reference, near page 444 in the PDF (printed page 420). Chapter 4 Queries, subselect, from-clause.

In case you missed Evlis' post on the midrange-l list, I agree with his assessment that it might be best to get a regular DB2 book. The SQL Reference isn't as effective a learning tool as I thought.
