Would love to get that guys opinion on what we have on the i5 -

I've met Dave Thomas a few times - mostly before IBM purchased OTI -
and at the time he had quite a high opinion of the underlying
concepts of what we think of as i5/OS (what was then OS/400). He
didn't think IBM had taken the Object concept far enough - but that's
what you'd expect from an OO pioneering guru. We couldn't convince
him of the joys of RPG though <grin> - although there were
discussions of the possibilities of linking Smalltalk (which was what
he was into in those days) with RPG. The idea never went anywhere at
the time, but I guess we got there in the end with the Java <-> RPG
JNI bridge.
Dave is a very opinionated individual and watching him "debate" with
some of the status-quo style IBMers was hilarious. Most of what we
think of as Eclipse was the outcome of the work of OTI and was an
evolution of their work with VisualAge for Java.
