when i modify the statement to view the records first, i get the
following...

select * from bankinst Where Exists(Select '1' from
BANKHEDR
where QISTCD=QHSTCD AND
QIAREA=QHAREA AND QIBANK=QHBANK AND QIIGRP=QHHGRP WHERE QHCLVL =
'4' AND QHFAX = 'O')

Keyword WHERE not expected. Valid tokens: UNION EXCEPT.

But may I suggest that you select from BANKINST first before actually
updating to make sure you are getting the correct records.
