you can write .net classes which use interop to call into the client access
win32 APIs. I guess you can use the client access .net provider, but would
not want to do that since it locks you into playing IBMs game of not
supporting the latest framework releases from MSFT.

So do the Client Access Win32 API's give me access to only SQL related
functions or can I access other object types on the i5 (i.e. data queues,
RPG programs, spool files). I am asking out of ignorance as I haven't used
them, but I am also seeing if you have ignorance of the Java Toolkit IBM has
which gives to _direct_ access to many resources on the i5.

back in the day of win 3.1 and win95, IBM released a comprehensive set
of APIs for accessing the as400 from a windows program. you can call
programs, read and write data queues. ( I think it was part of the
client access product from the start ) The advantage I see of C# over
Java is that .NET has very good facilities for interacting with native
interfaces. In windows, that means DLLs and COM.
