RE: Record locking 101

An UPDAT or DELET after a CHAIN would effectively release the lock on
the record, correct?

It would, but instead just chain the record w/the option to not lock the
record, then you don't have anything to release. Then again, reading it
for a lock and the releasing assures you that no one else has it locked
for update at the time you read it.
