These days the overhead is very small Brian - it only becomes really
significant if the target is changed on every call. The compilers (RPG400 and
RPG IV) only resolve the pointer now when the content of the variable changes.

And for anyone wondering if you can use this variable target approach with
subprocedures the answer is yes - and there is a very simple example in the
RPG Redbook "Who Knew You Could Do That ..."
