Hi Milan,
Sorry for not coming back earlier on this.
It is only because off last attempts to get things done in time before
going on holiday's....that I did not respond earlier on it.
Sure I would like to know more on what and how things are setup with
yours.
We are really searching for an possibility where we can receive SMS
messages and react on it but also in initiating an SMS conversation and
handle a possible response. The iSeries should at least be the central
point.
So far it seems that what you have in place is able to do this.
Although we are not afraid for the dirty world of AT commands (If we learn
the main way how to execute them) the queuing system you are talking about
sounds also very interesting.
Perhaps it is possible to do the quick demo with the colleague I included
on this mail.
He is the technical lead for this.
Kind regards,
Eduard Sluis.

Subject: SMS and the iSeries.
Hi Eduard,
I currently have an SMS messaging system setup on our System i. The GSM
modem connects using serial port; however, I have chosen to connect the
serial port into a serial to Ethernet adaptor allowing me to place the GMS
outside of our server room and into a wiring closet that has a much better
wireless signal.
To communicate with a GSM modem you need to use AT commands. These are a
set
of command defined by AT&T way back in the day. It's not necessary though.
We use a product that handles inbound/outbound sms communication
(queuing).
You can setup inbound message filters that do pretty much anything like
execute a CL or RPG program, etc. There are also features in there to
monitor your iSeries and execute commands on your machine from your cell
phone using sms... it's actually really cool!.
If you like I can give you a quick demo. Let me know.
Milan

Subject: SMS and the iSeries.
Dear all,
We would like to be able to receive and send SMS's with/from the
We can imagine that one of the way's to do so is connecting an GSM modemwith
(or other types of GSM hardware) to the serial port and communicating
it.done
But...... Serial port interfacing on the iSeries (in a long past has
that on other types of computers (interesting pieces of assemblerabout
programming with interrupts))??!!
Never done things like that on iSeries and as a result have no idea
what to use...list
Does anyone has an idea?? Can help to give us some idea ??
Regards,
Eduard Sluis.
