Mike - you said that "they do define it as Iseries data types as they have
many
other clients on the box"
What is the "box"? I-series, mainframe, Unix, pc?
If its mainframe (especially IBM) the field can be defined as numeric, but
if the field is NOT initialized, then the field has garbage. However, if
its an I-series (AS/400 et al) then do what my wife does and ignore me.

Then I don't see why you'd get decimal data errors? Surely if they have
many other clients on the box, and they want to supply the data in a
compatible format, they'll supply data with valid decimal fields that
won't cause any errors!
