Hi Rob,

IIRC, ALIAS allows a 30-character name for use with COBOL programs, and must follow COBOL naming rules (all-caps being the annoying one). Which is probably why RPG ignores it. However, SQL will use either one, and iSQL shows the ALIAS field name in preference to the 10-character field name when prompting.

But you're right, you can also declare the long field names in DDS if you have to, using the ALIAS keyword. Had a former coworker call me years ago. Had a client (he normally did PC development) in which he had to interface with their software. The PC software was all written using long field names. DBA on the as/400 set them up with short field names and he wanted to know how to meet in the middle and I suggested ALIAS. Got a big thank you but I don't know if he ever convinced them to CHGPF to use ALIAS.
