What? You'd ask your clients? Do they actually put a preference in their project specifications or do they say "Get me this pretty screen on time and on budget"?
But you're right, you can also declare the long field names in DDS if you have to, using the ALIAS keyword. Had a former coworker call me years ago. Had a client (he normally did PC development) in which he had to interface with their software. The PC software was all written using long field names. DBA on the as/400 set them up with short field names and he wanted to know how to meet in the middle and I suggested ALIAS. Got a big thank you but I don't know if he ever convinced them to CHGPF to use ALIAS.
