Yes, we can create Java StringBuffer (which is what you meant, I assume) today in RPG. The problem (as is always the case with Java) is performance.

I find it easier to just use dynamic allocation and deal with the string in chunks, this eliminates the 64k limitation without having to resort to Java.

But, if IBM provides expanded string lengths, we'll be able to use all of RPG's BIFs on them, and that makes everything faster and easier.
